Why It's Happening

Five Common Causes

1

1. Dirty air filter

A clogged filter restricts airflow, which can freeze the evaporator coil and stop cooling entirely. Always check this first — it's free and takes 60 seconds.

2

2. Thermostat set wrong or failing

Verify the thermostat is set to COOL (not FAN-ONLY), the temperature is below room temp, and that the batteries (if any) aren't dead.

3

3. Outdoor condenser issues

If the outdoor unit isn't running at all, you may have a tripped breaker, a blown capacitor, or a failed contactor. If it's running but warm air is coming out of vents, refrigerant levels may be low.

4

4. Refrigerant leak

Low refrigerant means the system can't absorb heat from your home — it runs but doesn't cool. This is the most common cause we see in calls. Diagnosis and recharge typically runs $250-$800.

5

5. Frozen evaporator coil

If you see ice on the copper lines outside or the indoor unit, the coil is frozen. Turn the system OFF immediately and let it thaw (4-6 hours), then check the air filter and call us.

When to Call Us

What to Check Before Calling Us

Three quick checks that save you a service call: (1) Replace the air filter. (2) Check the outdoor unit is plugged in and the breaker isn't tripped. (3) Make sure return-air vents are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs.

If the system still won't cool after those three checks, call us. We waive the diagnostic fee when you book the repair, so you only pay for actual work performed.
